When you are stuck as a couple – and want to work out together how to go on
I understand couples mediation as mediation between two people whose relationship is in crisis – whether or not you have already decided to stay together or to separate. Often you see it differently: one of you wants to leave, the other wants to stay. Mediation is possible in that case, too. How things go on in the end is open, and up to the two of you.
Typical reasons are arguments about money, the division of work or parenting, a big decision such as moving, building a house, wanting children or caring for your parents – or trust that has been broken. Mediation offers a space in which your conflict is in good hands and can be worked on quickly.
If you are already separating or divorcing and want to settle the consequences, you will find everything on my Divorce Mediation page.

a safe and confidential setting in which you both have an equal voice. Together we sort out what it is about and look beneath the surface of the argument: what really matters to each of you? I make sure that each of you feels understood – understanding does not mean agreeing, and you each keep your own view.
Moving, building a house, wanting children, changing jobs or caring for your parents: finding a solution you can both stand behind.
Work through conflicts about trust, jealousy, money or different life plans – even if it is still open whether you stay together.
Couples mediation is not couples therapy: it is pragmatic, focuses on the issues you want to resolve, and is often experienced as less exposing. The two can complement each other well – couples therapy or couples mediation? (in German)
When conversations keep ending in the same argument, a clear framework helps. In mediation, you decide – I make sure both perspectives have room and that you understand each other better again.
A structured process in which you as a couple resolve conflicts and make decisions together yourselves – supported by an impartial mediator.
Yes. Unlike couples therapy, mediation does not require a shared commitment to the relationship. It is normal for one of you to want to end it and the other not. The outcome is open.
Mediation focuses on the issues and decisions you want to resolve; feelings have their place in it, because they are often the key to a good solution. Therapy goes deeper into emotional and interpersonal processes over a longer period. The two can be combined well.
